Area : 45235 sqm
Bridge area : 4410 sqm
‘DENSITY’ - A word used in the description of many large cities. It is how, many people fit in a very small area & still operate efficiently. This word was a reason in crafting many spectacular icons like those inhabited bridges. Thus the bridges provided the continuity of the urban fabric by linking areas that are separated by rivers and other natural boundaries. The bridge was built during the british period in 1916.It was initially designed as a bascule bridge considering the ease of the waterway transportation. The centre portion of the bridge gets opened up to a height of 16m and gets closed soon after the ship pases, thus accelerating the road traffic. The ships got rerouted As new and easier routes were developed. Thus the bridge opening was permenantly closed and later the bridge was tared for the easier flow of vehicles. This bridge is part of a big history marked right a way from the making of the man-made island.-’Wllington Island’
Design proposal :The proposal is for a pedestrian friendly bridge with gardens, water aerations,
shades and two floating restaurants beneath the bridge. The project also aims at reopening the old
bascule bridge ,conserving it and making this as an event to celebrate the history of the place and
the bridge.
The project aims to develop public spaces in the form of gardens, plazas, and other synergic spaces
as well as enclose a historic bridge structure away from the buzzling city traffic.
